Remember that one time I had a garden?

Yeah, remember that one time I had a garden? Next year, I'm not so sure what my plans are. It was a lot of work - work I didn't do, and as a result, my garden was all over the place. Things were going well until we left for a week and I didn't work out a system for my plants to be watered. The plants were more tempermental than I expected. If they were dying I couldn't figure out if it was because I was watering them too much, or too little. Frankly, I just didn't care.

At the end of the season this is mostly what I have to show for all my hard work. I don't think I ever got a single normal, edible cucumber. They either turned yellow or were bent funny and therefore smaller in the center. Very odd. I don't eat tomatoes, so despite getting a "good crop" they went to family - and I later found them in the bag they'd been given in buried in the vegetable drawer. My green pepper plant was probably my favorite and most successful. I'd plant it again. Plus, I go through green peppers like nobody's business in this house.

Oh - and did you know vegetables don't get as big as they do in the grocery stores? I was pretty unimpressed by the fruits of my labor. I kept them on the vine too long in most cases because I kept waiting for them to "finish growing".

Here's to next year.

  1. I remember being surprised at how small the peppers were. I was the same way - I kept waiting for them to get bigger, picturing the giant ones you get at the store. =)
